Discrimination Law
The Centre provides the following services on human rights and discrimination issues:
- representation and advice to clients from all over New South Wales;
- education to community groups and other service providers about rights and obligations under relevant laws;
- law reform and policy advocacy, through submissions to government, liaison with other community groups and through representation on committees
The Centre represents clients in court and tribunal proceedings which involve discrimination and human rights issues. These cases are run under both state and federal legislation. The Centre has expertise in cases under the:
- Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW)
- Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth)
- Sex Discrimination Act (Cth)
- Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth)
The Centre can also provide advice and in some cases, representation in relation to:
- breaches of privacy rights
- breaches of civil liberties and human rights abuses, particularly where the breach or abuse is addressed by international treaties and conventions to which Australia is a party
The Centre runs cases involving discrimination on the following grounds:
- sex, including sexual harassment
- marital status
- race
- homosexuality
- disability
- transgender status
- pregnancy
