Health-Justice Partnership at Prince of Wales Hospital

Serious illness can raise a set of distinct legal problems that are not normally encountered in everyday life like power of attorney/enduring guardianship and superannuation as well as issues around employment and tenancy. Also, a significant proportion of reported legal problems (of all types) lead to stress-related or physical ill health.

KLC and South East Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) health-justice partnership delivers an innovative and early intervention legal assistance model to patients at the Prince of Wales Hospital’s general and mental health wards. It’s a collaborative, shared-care model, where KLC solicitors are embedded at the hospital, working closely with POWH’s social workers and health care professionals. We can visit patients at their hospital bed and help them with any legal problems they have before they escalate. The Health-Justice Partnership is funded by the NSW Attorney General through the CLSP program.

KLC solicitors are at the general hospital Social Work Department weekly and in the Mental Health Wards fortnightly. Referral to the service is mostly through a social worker or health professional but clients can self-refer.
